BHUBANESWAR: Phailin has exposed the civic problems of Bhimatangi as roads and lanes have become non-motorable. Rampant encroachment and poorly planned constructions have doubled the plight of locals.
The road near Jayadurga Temple at Bhimatangi Phase-II has turned into a huge cesspool of drain water and mud, making it impossible for four-wheelers to use it.
"Every time there is a heavy downpour, our locality gets submerged and the roads turn into mud ponds. Even if there is an emergency, no ambulance or car can enter the area," said a local resident. "We have constructed temporary barriers in front of our houses to stop rainwater from entering our premises," he added.
A retired government servant, Charan Behera, 61, added, "A few months back, the civic authorities repaired the drains, but left the sewerage line incomplete, which created more problem."
Mayor Ananta Narayan Jena said, "We have already made plan estimates for repairing roads in the locality, which would be done soon. The delay in garbage lifting has been a recent complaint; within the next week the entire city will be cleared of dirt and squalor."
